For a number of reasons by the end of last August, I decided my next novel should be the next volume of my 6th century alternative history series, the Roman Sky. But then family medical crises, my father’s death, and other things happening did not allow me to start writing this book, “Justinian’s Torch,” until this week. The story follows Cillian during the invasion of Dalriada [the west coast of Caledonia occupied by the Scots, aka Irish] by the Romans and Caledonii [aka Picts] and it introduces another new technology to that era. I was able to develop a story outline and maps before I began to write. Below is the map of Dalriada with Pictish and Old Irish [the language of the Scots back then, in our history and this alternative one] places names, many of which resemble their current place names. With any luck, Justinian’s Torch will be out next spring.
